I good friend and biz colleague and I were discussing this last week on a four hour drive in the mid-west. He's been a BMW guy for half of forever. He's a checkbook mechanic and the cost of the complexity makes him crazy. He can afford the rates at his local BMW store, but says it's way out of hand.
Another friend and biz colleague deliberately drives older cars for the simplicity and "fixability." She has raced SCCA for 20 years, and is a good wrench, but like many here likes being able to fix the cars she drives.
I look at many modern cars and think of the dependence on electronics and see a time when a 10-yr-old mechanically sound car with 130K on it will worth next to nothing because a couple of the computers (at a grand or so a pop) will be dead and the car won't run or pass inspection.
Makes me want to round up a few decent Saab 9000s, 9-5s and even 9-3s and just hold onto them. They have their own issues and complex stuff, but they do seem a bit simpler than many other options.
Hopefully some enterprising electrical engineers will start some businesses re-manufacturing or cloning the various computers and processors cars need so the stuff is available someplace other than at piratical dealers.
