And a suspension package... Posted by PGAero [Email] (#1143) [Profile/Gallery] (more from PGAero) on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 03:23:12 In Reply to: it's a badge..., James, Wed, 14 Sep 2011 10:16:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A suspension package that (arguably) has very few equals.
A '95-'99 M3 can be had for $5-12K. I'd drive one. (and I'd enjoy it more than I'd enjoy a $5-12K Accord or Saab)
My dad's '89 M3 handles like no other car I've driven (in the best way possible). It's also doubled in value since he bought it about 8 years ago. There's something about one of BMW's most winning chassis designs ever built that isn't matched by a Viggen or Aero, even though those are terribly fun cars to drive.
Now, since Ezra bought a convertible and then complained about the lack of torsional rigidity tells me that he's a bit off... but that's what makes his writing enjoyable.
Objectively, there's not a whole lot of reason to justify our Saab ownership... There's some subjective/emotional/heart/personal preference issues at play with owning a Saab.
For many, the BMW (and "M") badge is a badge thing. For others, it's the far more subjective driver/car interaction that is more satisfying in a properly sorted BMW (not any old 3-series) than in most other cars on the road. Unfortunately, for this driving enthusiast, that image jacks up the prices of these fine cars a bit. I can handle it.
For 90% of my driving satisfaction, a Saab will more than do (and did for my many years of 9000 Aero ownership). Heck, a Saab is better at transporting things and people and getting around in the snow (excepting the AWD BMWs) than any comparable BMW, but at the higher end of driving dynamics, the sport version of any BMW brings ME more satisfaction than the sport version of any Saab.
Cheers,
~Peter
