Rambler American got near 40 mpg... Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 24 May 2012 16:45:00 In Reply to: Another 40 mpg claim ..., dmz789qqq, Thu, 24 May 2012 14:49:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In the 1960 Mobil Economy Run a six-cylinder Rambler American came through with a _DOCUMENTED_ 38.9 miles per gallon. (In the Pure Oil economy trials the Rambler hit over 50 mpg!)
It's amazing what you can do when taking full advantage of economy driving techniques and the car's characteristics.
I've owned Rambler Americans and I can assure you that I never saw anything close to that _DOCUMENTED_ mileage. Likewise I would not expect the current Prius to get anywhere near 100 mpg in anything resembling normal driving, but it certainly might be possible under some conditions.
I see the Prius as an somewhat interesting gadget from an engineering standpoint but would have no interest in owning one.
