You've made some good points in this thread (I know you've made them before also).
One thing I like about a hybrid system is that regenerative braking saves some of the fuel (aka $$) that we turn into dust with normal brakes in an ICE.
I agree there are significant limitations of pure EV (range)... though performance need not be one of those limitations (many use the Prius as a strawman re performance - but it need not be so, it merely fills a niche Toyota is interested in)... people have converted porsches to EV with equivalent (or more) go than the original... the 600hp Mini was another example... Electric motor torque curves are even more "low end" oriented than a turbo, so there's no reason (other than range) that performance can't be great! Pure EV is very simple + reliable (at least in warm climates), but range is the biggest issue... and range is, as you say, limited by energy density...
something like the e-xwd or older system used in the old hybrid vert show car take advantage of gasoline as fuel yet should take advantage of other efficiencies around town... I like that, but I do wonder about the complexity... Normal ICE is actually pretty complex + has many systems that need maintenance... I would think a very simple diesel generator to drive a series electric would be a good topology...
will be interesting to see how this goes...
