Hybrids treat the small engine+gasoline tank as the battery. It works, as the setup drastically reduce the battery weight. Major areas of improvement down the road includes: flywheel or super-capacitor instead of the electrical battery for momentary charges . . .
More importantly, ICE does not have to be the only way stored energy can be liberated from the liquid fuel. Fuel cell will probably be able to replace the ICE down the road. For normal family cars, as soon as the fuel cell stack can deliver 20-30kw, the car will be marketable, as typical sustained high way cruise uses only 20-40hp. Burst of power for rapid accelearation can be extracted from the capacitor or flywheel. Ordinary batteries (even lithium ones) are really quite poor for high current applications.
For supercars and race cars, IMHO, piston ICE will be replaced by micro-turbine after the field goes to hybrids. Turbines have far superior power to weight ratio, and the electric capacitor or flywheel takes care of engine responsiveness and idle fuel economy (leaving the turbine off when "idle"). Most main battle tanks of the world have gone over to turbine-electric hybrids in the last 20+ years, in pursuit of the power-to-weight ratio, despite the dust problem with MBT application.
