I'm a bit out of date on the state of the art of fuel cells, though I did a bit with them years ago... One continuing issue I suspect is the interface between readily available gasoline + a more compatible fuel to oxidize in the cell (eg hydrogen or an alcohol)... fuel cells are old technology, but the engineering to make them marketable in this application is probably quite ongoing...
I should look up the micro turbine hybrid stuff. sounds interesting.
I still like the pancake wheel motors, though I can think of some technical complexities... but the idea of getting the motor weight out from under the hood + integrating it directly with regenerative braking in the wheels is cool... iirc, only adding 2 lbs to each wheel is not that bad! and ridiculous power...
