We had a tDI for a few years, years ago. There is a lot of blow-by gas with the diesels that is moist. That goes into the intake upstream of the turbo and condenses in the IC and oil mist in collects in the IC. Many owners on tdiclub were fitting their own oil separators that also collected a lot of water. Then you had to deal with what to do with that. I do not know if the designs have improved to fix this. What could be done is to vent the crank case gases into the intake downstream of the IC and upstream of the turbo with valves to vent upstream of the turbo only when on boost.

The EGR also condensed soot and oil in the intake manifold that would turn into a very hard thick deposit. It was not unusual for the intake flow area to be very choked off. Cleaning that took hours and was difficult and very messy. Some found that it was better to purchase new manifolds.

The timing belt changes are very difficult and technical, frequent as well! You need to replace tensioners and other gear at the same time.

No spark plugs, but the glow plugs have a limited life and cost a lot more than spark plugs.

The engine oil needed now is very expensive and critical.

There are many things that make a tDI costly to own.
