It seems that VW, BMW and the other manufacturers that sell Diesels in the US apply a very hefty markup, i.e. $6000+ above the equivalent gasoline engine car. While I understand that there may be some additional equipment required and some stronger parts like crankshafts, connecting rods, and engine block, I don't see how this adds up to anything close to $6K. And it's not like these are rare parts in the rest of the world. What am I missing?
