I think the thing with the 335d is that BMW only wanted to go through the expense of certifying one diesel in the US. No question the smaller one would be better for the 3 series, but the larger engine can also be used in the 5 series and the SUVs. Diesels always cost more (heavier duty components, crazy high pressure fuel system, exchange rate from usually being made in Europe) but I agree that mark up is extremely - I think they intended it to be a niche product in the US (especially the 3 series) and are just sort of testing the waters. Similar to that crazy V10 VW/Audi motor, and I guess Mercedes still selling a few to ex-W123 nuts. No one except VW has really commited to trying one mainstream.
