Problems seem to be surfacing with diesels which are making them less attractive to used-car buyers
These days, here in Europe certainly, they come with scads of well-intentioned but expensive emissions hardware - such as particulate filters which don't respond well to short shopping/commuting use because they never get hot enough
Also, the use of dual-mass flywheels to smooth the driveline is leading to failures a few years down the line. Diesels fitted with old-fashioned torque-converter automatics don't have these flywheels because the torque converter does the job
The net result is that cars are bought by companies for fleet use, then unloaded onto the used market three years later, at the time when the problems are likely to surface, so instead of being good value they are potential timebombs
Finally, petrol engines are becoming much more economical and are cheaper to buy so for many motorists, especially those nor driving huge mileages, they make more sense
