ultimately, while a turbo 4 sounds like it would be more economical, a larger less aerodynamic vehicle will drink more fuel than a smaller more aero model... I still don't get why the 9-5 wagon didn't sell like hotcakes...
anyway, this mpg thing is no big surprise to me - I find the newer Kias and Hyundais to be much improved over years past, but there is still a kind of veneer there - a "too good to be true" element to the cars. Sure they have many of the bells and whistles of a Saab or BMW or Audi, and really are quite attractive in that sense, but something's got to make up the huge difference in price and it's not just labour rates... the differences in fundamental core values is real, and it is costly to make a car that is slower to rust, more robust in a collision, more sophisticated in handling... not to diss your purchase - I'm just explaining why I'm not too surprised by this news item... they've sure sold a crapload of cars the past few years! I wonder how many people will stick with the brand once they get fed up with the veneer (or perhaps the veneer is now thick enough for most?)...
