The reality is that simultaneous with Hyundai/Kia's improvements, the euro brands have had to cost cut (over the last decade or so), such that the core values of many euro products are not what they might have otherwise been relative to the past (it wasn't just GM cutting at Saab's "Saabiness" - it would cost a fortune to produce a c900 today, and the same would probably be true for an '80's Merc or 3 series). The gap is certainly narrowing. Actually, the same is true at Toyota, which (to my understanding) has lost market share due to the effects of cost cutting to compete with the Koreans. And the Koreans have long been emulating Saab (turbos, hatchback shapes, other design elements) - perhaps seeing the value proposition in Saab relative to other Euro brands... it is not surprising that many see something there...
I also should not forget that I got my 2004 9-5 at a "cheaptech" price in part because it was a trade in at a Hyundai dealer... many former Saab owners have gone that way I think...
