I would say you nailed it with your last statement regards the thickness of the veneer and it's appeal to the mass - much like past discussions on Japanese makes being appliances. The Koreans have managed to package a lot of value with broad appeal into their products. But take a peek under the hood if you are so inclined and I think you may find some well thought out engineering - albeit not top echelon but functional.
Yeah the Europeans brands sill have an absolute edge in the categories you mention - but many do not either need, recognize or value those distinctions.
So in the appliance category of autos I see the Koreans as rapidly reaching par with Japan and exceeding them in value.
I just didn't find much appeal in the US auto makers offerings either.
And lest I forget the wife loves the Hyundai and I now take possesion of her 2004 9-5.
