1. Buy a plot of land where you like to vacation, and buy a motor home. When it comes to escaping local natural disaster, animals with their own mobility usually do better than plants. The pneumatic wheels and frame also absorb earth quake extremely well. LOL
2. Buy a two family on bank sale where you like to vacation. All the grounds keeping expense can be written off as business expense, and you have someone to watch the house for you when you are not around. There is no such thing as paying off a house nowadays. The property tax can be higher than mortgage payment on some of those REO sales. In the years to come, you will also be providing a roof to some young adults before they pay off student loans and able to borrow and buy their own homes. Good karma all around.
With all the dirt cheap houses on sale nowadays, I really don't think there is an urgent need to chop down more trees and open up more mines to get the material for new houses, especially the idea is to get an economical house to begin with.
