I don't have any point of comparison with regard to price. It's the only house we have ever had built. I would not be surprised if it wasn't somewhat more expensive, just because of the quality of the materials and the unique construction, not to mention shipping it from the factory in Asheville. There's more wood in it than a typical stick-built house, and the angles inside probably make the drywall more expensive to put up.
What makes it so resistant to wind damage is that it presents only one eight foot wall panel directly to the wind, no matter which way it's coming from, and the circular shape allows the wind to blow around the structure. Also, the roof overhangs the walls all around the building, so there is more protection to hail and heavy rain.
