OT: Torn between two cars, MGA vs C900 'vert Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 8 May 2013 11:01:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
For years I have lusted after old British sports cars, Healeys, MGAs, the XK120 & 140 Jags, etc. Most of these are outside my comfortable financial limits - but not the MGA.
Tomorrow I will be looking at two well maintained MGAs in the greater Flint area and, if time allows, I will also look at the pristine C900 'vert at Trio Motors which is advertised in the Saabnet classifieds. Although the Trio Motors example is about half the current price of an MGA I have located others, with more miles and a few problems obviously, which are only 1/6 the cost or less.
If the MGA is a 10 on the appearance scale the C900 'vert is a solid 9.
Any and all MGA parts are available in the aftermarket whereas almost everything for a C900 has to be salvaged.
The C900 is 30 years newer. The C900 has real windows and a weather tight exterior. The C900 can carry 4 people and their luggage. The C900 has 3-point belts, A/C, dual circuit brakes, a modern electrical system, and some are automatic (+/-).
The MGA 'may' appreciate in price, but it is also possible that prices have peaked since many sellers are a decade or two older than me and are getting rid of their cars because they can no longer get in the car (apparently artificial hips and knees have limits too). Those younger than me may have nostalgic visions of only late '60s cars and newer, meaning not much future appreciation potential.
Likewise the C900s may not increase in value either but they are only a fraction of the cost now so there is not much to lose.
Decisions, decisions.....
