I spent a few years living and working in Southern New Hampshire. I really did not like the winters at all! (I remember being puzzled at the road signs warning of "frost heaves," initially had no idea what they were.)
New Jersey is not too bad in terms of natural disasters at least in the western part of the state. The coast gets hit by hurricanes on a pretty regular basis. Tornadoes are rare, earthquakes almost unknown. We do have winter weather and salted roads to deal with of course, but not as bad as in New England.
The worst issues here of course are the man-made problems of corruption and exorbitant taxes. There is even an "exit tax" which homeowners are forced to pay when moving out of the state!
