80s were a long long time ago in terms of automotive advancement. I think you have to look at the slew of turbo charged 4s offered today and how they were developed - many are recent designs and specifically engineered to support the high output per liter of a turbo - plus many have variable cams direct injection and so on . Impossible to predict the reliability of an engine - but many of these turbo 4s use the same or similar design concepts - stronger pistons, rods, valve trains , etc.
And the water cooled dual scroll turbos are way improved over the old big oil cooled single vane turbos.
Will some people neglect or destroy these engines thru lack of maintenance - undoubtedly but that's the case with any auto.
Not the same as bolt on turbo approach used by the big 3 years back.
