If the TurboCoupe (or Mustang SVO) had a weakness, the engine wasn't it. The Lima 2.3 turbo is capable of substantial power and is as close to a bulletproof motor as the '80s had. It's incredibly stout. The Lima played a substantial role in the development of the Volvo b-series motor, which went on to have a famous turbocharged legacy of its own. Ford also obviously participated in a decade's worth of development of turbocharging technology when they had Volvo, and has a VERY impressive background in racing with turbocharged motors - RS200, RS500, Cosworth Escorts and Sierras, etc. Some of the best cars in motorsport history are turbofords.
My XR4Ti - a Lima 2.3 turbo powered car - has nearly 300,000 miles on its motor and still manages 250hp on 20 pounds of boost. I've had a built motor (big cam, big valves, forged pistons) sitting in my garage for almost fours years waiting for the factory motor to give up. Still hasn't, and I'm starting to think it won't.
I wouldn't let a little eurosnobbery blind you to the fact that Ford has a very colorful and successful history with turbos. They've done quite well at them for nearly as long as Saab. Just because they didn't sell them all here, or didn't bet the farm on them shouldn't be construed as inability. It could just be savvy marketing and product strategy. After all, they're still in business.
