into the fire. Other than the warranty you're going sideways instead of forward--the car you're buying isn't any real improvement of your situation. VW/Audis are known maintenance hogs (do some searches here and Other Cars) though it appears from your experience BMW's are no bargain either. Both cars appear to be the worst of both worlds--payments and repairs. I spent 20 years driving Saabs I paid cash for and it was always a bargain. But European cars have gotten so complicated and troublesome of late (though I also had a similar experience with a Subaru I bought with 60K on it)I flat out wouldn't consider any of them after the factory warranty is up. You'd be better off either buying something you can pay cash for or buying/leasing new. Hell, for a couple of grand and $299 a month you could drive a new Mercedes for the next 3 years--easy breezy with no unexpected "gotchas." Actually I'd take a serious look at one the American offerings, Buicks, Fords, maybe even Caddy and Lincoln. Life is short and if you can't cough up three bills a month you sure as hell can't afford a needy, aging, money sucking BMW.
