First off, do you only have 1 car? If you have multiple cars I really wouldn't worry about this at all... but even with 1 car, I think people really worry and fuss too much with a first baby. To quote the nurse at the hospital: you need a proper safe crib, a good car seat, diapers... not a whole lot else is a "need". So, as long as the car is safe, and you have a good car seat that fits it etc, I would not worry too much. When we had our first baby, our only car was a 15 year old c900. We were fine. Now our kids are a bit bigger and do stuff - that's when there are more demands on the cars.

Basically, if you keep the BMW in good repair, such that you wouldn't worry about it letting you down to get to work, then it should be fine for your child also. I think if you are concerned about any repair causing disruption, NoSnaab's advice is probably safest (but most expensive)... and it is not a sure fire solution anyway, because new cars break too - and it's the disruption, not the cost that usually is the issue with kids on board... Personally, I like driving Saabs where I can keep on top of the maintenance myself and know they are road worthy - saves $ in the end. My newest car is a 2004 9-5 and we have kids. But I know that doesn't work for everyone!
