you can get good deals on some new models that don't have the allure (or pricing) of the most popular ones. Even some domestics are getting to be downright pleasant to drive these days. And the family hauler doesn't need to be the fastest or best cornering car around.
Given that the Passat has a known history and a CPO warranty it's probably not a bad deal, but be sure you know what's covered. As I recall, those can need a whole lot of front suspension work to replace worn bushings, so you want to be sure things like that are covered. I think the Passat and Audi A4 are closely related, so remember that replacing the t-stat requires taking the front end apart. You want this to be a CPO repair! Unless it turns out to be a fantastic car, keep it until the CPO is done and move on.
As for the Bimmer, they can be expensive to own and get more so with age. You're looking at a cash infusion now. When is the next one? In three months? Six months? Nice cars, but as friends who have them tell me, "Great cars when you have a warranty."
