i'm confused about your saying it's a 12 speed - the link below shows a shimano 8 speed cassette with multiple teeth options 12/21 12/23 12/25 and 13/23 and 13/26. I think the standard is a 12/23T - but I seldom use the smallest 2 cogs and wear 5 6 and 7 cogs out - so yes being a cheaptech I was looking at maybe 12/25 using the smaller cogs more - but not sure if it works that way and what a 13/23T is all about.
The frame does limit my options to an speed cassette. I rode a good deal this summer - but if you buy lower end components - well you get what you pay for. I replace the chain annually and usually the cassette every 3 yrs. And I think last year I replaced the outer crankset .
