yes, used is often the way to go... many bikes are sold to people with more money than time to ride them, so they can be sold used in really good shape... and a few days out on the trails and any bike I own starts looking pretty ghastly (lots of tight gnarly rocky technical stuff here to bang things up against). I really really want to buy a brand new Ibis Mojo SL... but the "cheaptech" in me can't bear to part with thousands of $$ just to massively depreciate it over a couple rides, so I will look used...
Road bikes hold up better. dtech: I agree, the cheapest solution is to just buy an 8 speed cassette... you could upgrade but no need. Why not just tweak the ratios based on what you want more of (I think you mentioned hill climbing). If your front rings need replacing also, nows a good time to pick all the right ratios - calculate what you've got, and adjust to suit your roads. If you're not a racer or really constant cadence oriented, personally, with 8 gears, I'd go for a wider back range...
