I ride with an 8-speed rear on my hard tail mountain bike... but my road bike is a 10-speed rear.
As to your questions, I think SRS900 is right on the mark. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to ride on the 4-5-6 instead of the 5-6-7. You could go with a 13/26, which might make you ride one gear "down" (5 instead of 6, maybe).
I would also get on C-list or the bay-of-e to see what's out there.
A worn chain will contribute to your rear cassette becoming worn sooner than it needs to. A stretched chain will make those cogs short in the tooth before they should grow long-in-the-tooth, if you get what I'm saying! Ask your local bike shop how many miles you should ride with a chain, and replace it as recommended.
Still, nice work for wearing out a cassette.
