I can't entirely say whether they truly justify their cost, but I bought one based on my parents' positive experience and have never looked back. Four years later it works perfectly and has given me zero reasons to doubt its performance.
I will admit that after dropping some major coin on a vacuum cleaner and unboxing it, I was disappointed. Man, are Dysons ever plasticky. And it doesn't feel like quality Mercedes Benz plastic, it feels like cheap '90s Hyundai plastic. I was certain, at the time, I'd made a mistake and it would literally shatter into a million pieces. Clearly I was wrong - it still feels *super cheap* (to me), but it's in as-new condition and works as-new to boot.
My gut tells me that you could get the same performance for less money if you shopped around. But, as far as magic bullets go, the Dysons are hard if not impossible to beat. Worth the investment, I'd say.
One thing worth considering: If you buy a refurb Dyson you can save a fair amount of cash, and then buy a SquareTrade warranty to get that long warranty. I was just about to go down that road when Kohl's (IIRC) had some crazy sale that took the value out of my original plan. Might be worth looking at.
