As we remember them, Hyundai used prior generation drivetrains from Mitsubishi, put into a somewhat lame body and were know for "cheap cars". A guy at work had one and I helped him fix it; it had inferior grade parts throughout, from rubber intake hoses (torn) to hard plastic dashboard parts, to deteriorating bushings, etc.
My view on Hyundai changed abruptly in 2007 when I read an article about a guy in Phoenix clocked going 147 mph in a rental Sonata V6 - obviously, something changed in the interim. Having been in the telecom and electronics industries, I have seen first hand what Korean companies are capable of producing when motivated.
