Thanks, it sounds very much like what happened Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 18 Jan 2014 11:08:39 In Reply to: It boots up, well that's great, vvack0matic [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 18 Jan 2014 07:18:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I dropped off the machine at the repair shop. I should get it back mid-week with a new OS and restored data files. I will then spend hours reloading the programs as those may not have been on the machine, although something other than the typical home correspondence files consumed 12.2 Gig of drive space and I don't think it was all photos.
Last year's tax info is probably gone but I have hard copies if needed. The only documents my wife and I could remember generating and storing sine the last backup are also on hard copy or attached to old emails we can retrieve.
The shop did find the files I restored last night. Silly me, I thought they would be returned to the My Documents folder and arranged as originally stored. They are all there.
All program files appear to be gone or weren't returned to the Programs folder. The last full system backup was Nov 2011, everything since then was only My Documents. I need to look for my last printout from BelArc Advisor which identified everything on the machine. This will help with knowing what programs need to be reloaded - my memory is only so good.
Don't let this happen to you. Do a backup now!
Knowing it may have been a virus somehow feels better than thinking I was just stupid. Although I was stupid to allow the machine to get infected.
