I got about 2 dozen road bikes, with a big range of age and price. But for example:
"$1250 MINT CONDITION 2012 DeVinci SL2 frame with full Shimano 105 and other top of the line parts. Retailed for 2,000$."
There was also a half price Cervelo, a nice eclipse for $480, a brand new norco carbon road bike for $1300 normally $1700 (or trade for a mountain bike - someone didn't ride enough bikes before hitting the cash)... Sure the numbers won't always be exactly 50% off (mine was, but not always), and the discounting is bigger for higher end bikes... but my point is used can be a great deal. Just have to look a little. There is always a cost, and I agree, going to your LBS gets you better service (and can earn you free parts and advice if you pick a good shop!)
Also, it sounds like you are riding a $1000 bike, but you got it on sale... so it sounds like we mostly agree - I'm not saying to pay too much for a bike, but around $1000, they start to get good. I gauge things by MEC (like REI in theUS). Their cheapest road bike is $1000. MTB about the same. They max value for money but don't sell junk.
