I think your standards are much higher than the average person, but your mistake is asserting that your standard is the norm. Leaving the Walmarts and Canadian Tires aside (even though they represent a pretty large market share), go into a typical standalone bike shop and you will find at least 90% of the bikes are below your "entry level" price of $1000. I am pretty confident that if you polled people on how much they spent on their last bicycle, upwards of 99% will say less than $1000, probably 90% would say less than $500. I'm talking C$ too, it would be even lower in US$. In fact, I would bet a majority would be unaware it's even possible to spend over $1000 on a bicycle; those would be the Walmart shoppers. I spent about $700 on a Trek a few years ago, and based on the models they had on the floor (i.e. not special order), that was middle of the road price-wise. It works fine, and I really don't envision it falling apart any time soon.
