If not insulated with foam-in-place, freezer walls can be full of frost and that creates huge heat transfer losses. If you disconnect a fridge like that it may leak water for days. If it had frost inside fiber glass insulation, the wet fiberglass can slump as it thaws and the unit will never be right after that.
New large units are around $60-65 per year, so the operating costs are trivial. In many parts of the country, a 100 watt bulb left on 24x7 would cost around $100 per year. So the new refrigerators are a 60-70 watt average load. I totally agree with comments made by others that a expensive complicated unit that does not last a long time is not cost effective.
I am getting a new fridge delivered today. I typically never get "extended warranties". But with the complexity of these new units I wanted a 5 year plan. At Lowe's, for a high end fridge, that costs $149. At Best Buy, they wanted $600 for a 5 year warranty. So that was the deal breaker. So my choice of where to purchase was determined by the unit cost plus warranty cost. Best Buy happened to have the lowest cost during the Mother's day sales. Lowe's price matched that then I also get 10% back on a gift card. So you might want to consider such factors. Also find out if free delivery also includes removing the units doors to get it in the house and taking away an old unit. [Relative to Best Buy, the cost differential was $450 for the difference in the extended warranty and $260 on the gift card. That makes $710 total. It can pay to do your homework!]
Note that large capacity refrigerators are taller than older generations. You need to measure the opening below any cabinetry that would be above the unit. A common problem is reduced clearance from kitchen remodeling where a ceramic floor is added and not clearances are reduced by around one inch. This can also make it impossible to install many dishwashers or make it impossible to easily remove one that has been walled in. In my case I needed to get a European made dishwasher. Note that Bosch makes dishwashers to USA standards and they can be too big. [I have shaved 1/4" off of cabinets overhanging my fridge location to accommodate the new fridge.]
