As was shown before, an equivalent fridge would pay for itself in ~3 years.
IMHO, most stories of the "they don't make them like they used to" kind are BS. New stuff is usually cheaper/better/more reliable - it just may be differently skewed towards one of those three properties.
The cars with 100k+ miles were considered done for just not so many years ago.
