(...And I do NOT mean BestBuy or Lowes or Home Depot. Sears, at the least, or check your local yellow pages)

At your usage, you're up to about 1,100 KW per year (using 3 kw/day) for just the old GE fridge. Modern units - even the humongous (and spendy!) bottom-freezer french door ones - come in at under 600KW/ year, so your running cost will be about half or less with a replacement.

Yes, the old GE may run for another 30 years, or it might not make it another 30 days. But with a new one, you're saving yourself $100 per year or more just on the electricity to run it.

Current unit: 1095 kw/year (3x365) X 20 cents = $219

KitchenAid Model # KFIV29PCMS as an example, a humongous french door model, $2,500 in NJ:

529 kw/year x 20 cents = $105.80, annual savings = $113.20

~or~

Frigidaire Model # FFHT2117LB, inexpensive, simple top-freezer, < $600 in NJ:

408 kw/year x 20 cents = $81.60, an annual savings up to $137.40.

ROI (return on investment) depends on how posh a fridge you buy to replace the old soldier. Buying a $2,500 fridge will take a lot longer to recoup your expense (22+ years!) than buying a $600 fridge (4 years, 4 months)! Fridges can be had for as little as $400, or well into five digits...

But buying "durable goods" like refrigerators is a lot more complex than simply looking at the Energy Guide sticker! Remember, YOU will be the one needing to look at it and use it for the next 30 years! Controls, doors, freezer placement, drawer size, ice maker, LED lighting, ad nauseum, just might sway you to a more costly unit.

Also, look into CT's energy rebate programs. A fellow (former) Saaber bought a house last year in Danbury, had CT come in and do an energy audit, and got a free replacement refrigerator! He also had them take away the really old clunker in the basement instead of the tiny, but not nearly so old unit upstairs. It's a basic top-freezer refrigerator that is all he'll need.

I'm buying a condo in the next couple weeks, and the outside AC unit is dated from 1987. Refrigeration and HVAC technology has advanced a LOT in 27 years, meaning that there are considerable energy savings to be had by replacing it soon.

BTW - VERY cool oven!

PS - oddest thing I ever saw with a GM stamp on it was a receiver for an M-16 rifle
"Manufactured by the Turbo-Hydramatic Division of General Motors".

PPS: The oddest stamp I saw on an M-16 reciever had to be "Manufactured by Rock-Ola". Yes, the old jukebox company!
