I largely agree, that if you are looking at a 30 year old fridge, you are most likely going to save a lot on energy if you replace it. There are usually incentives in place from electric utilities to do so. Power rates are inevitably going to increase, so the payback time will slowly diminish.
That said, I doubt a modern fridge will last 30 years. Ours is now about 12, and it's still doing fine, but some of the stupid plastic interior parts are breaking.
Another tip: there are very few fridge manufacturers. Most are just rebranded and reskinned (kind of like the BAIC c70 above!). So you may find an Armana and a Maytag, that are completely identical, except the Maytag has a Maytag badge and slightly different (not better, just different) interior for $150 more... and Kitchen Aid will sell you the same fridge with a nicer handle and skin for $400 more than the Maytag. Reality is, you can easily re-skin a fridge... heck, when I bought mine, it came with a brochure to buy new skins for it (copper, union jack, you name it!)... it's like getting a case for your iphone...
oh yeah, just wanted to add that my family had one of those old frigidaire stoves and they were awesome. Only issue is finding parts nowadays but otherwise, lots of unique qualities that are hard to find in today's market.
good luck!
