is partially true. Like you say, technology has enabled some things to perform better and last longer. Otoh, we live in a climate of outsourcing, ruled by bean counters. So, where before, things would be built with metal to be fairly robust, now similar things are built with plastic just thin enough to last a while... and that may be fine in some cases and not in others.
I would say with the cars that it is true that general maintenance/repairs happen a little less often on new cars than old (due to technology), but at least with Saabs, "they don't make 'em like they used to" is significantly true (ok, they pretty much "don't make em", but aside from that)... If you dig into a c900 or a 9000, they really are pretty solidly built. Eg when the new ones start to rust, the metal is thin and they perforate fast. It is quite possible that our c900's will outlast our 9-5 even though it is a very good car... those old ones were built like tanks... I think long time Merc owners would have something similar to say on that subject also!
With a fridge... I dunno... ours has plastic supports that are breaking and may be hard to source... I should do that... but it does run well. I would advise replacing a 30 year old one if it is sucking energy. When we bought, we used the 30 year old fridge that came with the house for a year (at which point it broke down). It used 3x the energy of our new one that is 50% larger!
