My wife and I at one time had an '87 900S 3-door and an '88 9000 turbo. Superfluous detail, yes, but this is a Saab BB. Anyway, she was 9 months pregnant with our second child, and we had a babysitter on-call to stay with our firstborn when the time came. My wife's water broke, and we called the pager number we were given. No answer. Called it two more times. About an hour after we first called, a friend of the on-call sitter called us to say that we had paged her mistakenly and gave us the correct number. The on-call sitter then contacted us and said that she was on her way.

I pulled the 9000 turbo around front and brought my wife out to it. She had to have her right leg lifted into the car. Might mean the baby is pretty low in the pelvis. Mild panic. When the sitter arrived, we were off. It was 10 pm, not much traffic, and I was using that Saab's outstanding acceleration. At the stop sign next to the hospital, my wife let out a yell, one that I've heard women give as they're delivering (I'm a doctor). I told myself I wasn't going to look, that the ER door was only one block away. I hit 50 mph in that one block. They got her upstairs right away from the ER, and she delivered our daughter upstairs in labor and delivery, 9 minutes after we hit the ER door. That's gotta be some kind of record for getting someone upstairs. I managed to park the car in the parking lot (nothing at all available in the ER parking lot or on the street) and run up to the room in time. Another record, no doubt. Our daughter is now 16. We drove that car until it rusted to pieces, but the engine was good to the end.
