As you may recall, we had a big fire here in 1871, and the building codes reflect concern that this not happen again. Therefore, all high voltage electrical circuits have to be contained in metal conduit (or armored cable) and boxes. No Romex, even for residential use.
This may not be an entirely bad idea: at my business, I recently had a near-fire when a 20A rated light switch and a couple of inches of attached wire burned up. Load on the circuit was approximately 15A, but on disassembly (I was curious why this happened) I found that the contact points inside the switch were misaligned and only touching on a small overlapped surface, got very hot - guess where this UL-rated, 5 year old switch was made?
