This has been going on for quite a while also (note the date on the link is 2003). Fortunately, as greater integration on chip happens, the function of the chip is much harder to counterfeit. Not too hard to make a cheap junk BJT that looks similar electrically and package wise to a higher spec BJT (or capacitor or opamp). Much harder to clone a specialized high pin count chip.
