To echo what the others have said, we've been using a front loader for 7+ years (Kenmore HE3 which is really a Whirlpool, it was in the house we moved into) and have never had a smell issue. We never run any special cleaning cycles, but we do use chlorine bleach with white loads pretty regularly so maybe that's having a similar effect. All we do is leave the door ajar. Ours is in a laundry closet on the bedroom level of the home, so with the closet doors closed it's just cracked open an inch or two yet we've never had an issue.
Since we've had it we replaced one of the drum supports/shocks, and the plastic handle on the door. It gets used 4-5x/week. I imagine it has saved a lot of water and natural gas compared to a top loader.
The other benefit we're able to realize is that you can put the dryer on top of it. This leaves our closet with ample floor space for the laundry bins and still plenty of shelving.
