Wow, that's a doozy of a parts bill! I've heard a lot about control panel failures on many brands of front loaders, dryers, and also dishwashers... I wonder though how many times it is just bad connectors - that reseating things might solve the problem. There is a heck of a lot of vibration, heat and humidity in some of those machines! Bad news for connectors! That said, I have heard of melted control boards etc also, so it can be a poor design/engineering thing also (electronics should never "melt" or potentially catch fire - the ee would be in deep doo doo). Our dryer's power board went kaput - it was the relays. I attempted soldering new ones in but after 10 years, the original p/n was nla, and the ones I had on hand were not quite the right spec. Ended up buying a new module (a bit over $200 - no fun). Relays are essentially a connector. Anything electromechanical is suspect for an EE. It is EE101: mechanical stuff fails first! In that sense, the brushes on my washing machine motor were also electromechanical...
Actually, what concerns me more with front loaders are leaks. Our old one was starting to leak because the seal got torn. Repair was doable and parts were not expensive, but I got a great deal on a new one so I went that route. Maybe I just got lucky that I didn't burn out a $1000 board!
I think the key is finding well made stuff. At the high end Miele is great. The Speed Queen comments above sound interesting. Used to be able to rely on Maytag or whatever, but that is not really true anymore - can depend a lot on the model. It's a bit of a crap shoot!
