It is true that control modules are costly. In 12 years with a bosch front load pair, I replaced 1 power module on the dryer, and it cost about $250 for the part (bought locally - might have gotten it cheaper online but we wanted it quickly). I replaced it myself. I also spent $30 on brushes for the washer.
Front loaders are also more costly up front. Our first pair was around $2k new. I'd have to run the numbers to see how much we save, especially vs a newer machine. For some reason, I recall doing this roughly back when we bought them. Laundry is a sizeable cost in terms of water and power (power to dry clothes and to heat the water tank). It depends a bit on whether you use gas or electricity, price per unit of these in your area, and various other factors in terms of the payback, but I think it is relatively quick. For sure if you got a dud machine with many service calls, that could eat your savings, it is true! Front loaders break also. BTDT.
