Yeah, they don't mention the other cars in each category or how close they are. I think it is fair to be somewhat suspicious of CR, or at least to take their conclusions with a really big grain of salt. Analysis like "X performed better but Y is cheaper so is the winner" may be right for some people and not others... basically has more to do with whether or not one shares CR's value system, which perhaps the CR readership does, but meh...
They did actually say that they preferred the performance of the impala to the similarly sized Acura that cost a lot more (RL? I forget, I get their models mixed up)... Acura has for many years been chastised for producing some boring larger cars, and if the impala has some ng9-5 underpinnings, they may be more comparable than Acura vs Impala of old...
Anyway, I never really get the categorization of cars etc. Often the size difference between categories is really small (like 9-3ss vs og9-5). Many of the crossovers can kind of fit in a few places and how they do depend on where they are put. Eg CR seemed to lump outback with legacy, but others lump outback with SUV's... really it is neither. it is a raised wagon. CR probably couldn't care less about wagons...
Honda seemed to still do quite well in the jd powers initial rel survey. Many of their cars were 2nd place finishers. It is good to see that GM has improved (significantly due to absorbed/pillaged SAAB technology?) but I'm not going to support them with my $$. Screw you gm! Once the market runs out of useable saabs, I'll probably look at other euro (and other in general) brands...
