We rented a 2008 legacy wagon (I don't think they do that anymore - basically a not raised outback without the extra body panels and a bit more spartan inside). Put about 3000+ miles on it. I liked it a good deal more than the Forester - seats were uncomfortable (maybe worse than Forester due to seating angle - I'm fairly tall), but handling was much much better. Biggest complaint was the tranny - 4 speed autobox with short gears and slow shifting response made it a slug on the highway with poor fuel economy and high rpms. Quick enough around town (quick off the line due to wasted 1st gear). Forester was the same. Was the 2011 a 4 speed auto? Or had they gone to CVT by then? The early reports I heard on the CVT's were pretty meh, but they have probably better tuned the responses for the newer model years. Sticks are still geared quick off the line, but the 5th gear saves the day vs the 4 speed auto.

Honestly, I wanted to like Subies and I would definitely test drive them again, especially once the world is out of SAABs... it's just that there was so much lacking after the SAAB experience. There is much overlap of SAAB and Subie market segments, yet, the cross shopping only went 1 way. Too bad. 9-3X should have sold like hotcakes here.
