Good point to raise regarding the longevity of the car. My oldest is 8, so I cannot see the car going another 9 years. I rack up about 18-20k per year. So add about 180k to the odometer of whatever I get before tossing the keys to my oldest.
Many have pointed out the ease of loading a minivan with kids & cargo. That operation only takes a few minutes at most for daily drives, but then you have 10-30 minutes of driving... a minivan.
I'm satisfied with the capabilities of my 9-5 wagon now for hauling kids & gear, plus the driving experience itself is very satisfying. I'll live with the 1-3 minutes of "pain" loading versus the 10-30 minutes of "pleasure" driving the Aero wagon.
As stated before, I also have a Mazda 5 "microvan", which is technically listed as a wagon by my insurance. I love it, except that you are trading cargo room for that 3rd row seat. The lack of power which is partially offset by the MT and sporty handling. I'm being serious - it really is a lot of fun to drive. There was a European option for a 3-position 2nd row, which would have solved the 3rd row/cargo issue for me. Alas, not available/legal in the USA.
