"Since you haven't bought a new car in over 30 years, you killed SAAB."

Many years ago I met Bob Sinclair at a Saab Club gathering at what was at that time Saab's U.S. headquarters in Connecticut. I told him how much I loved my '85 Saab 900, purchased new - he shook my hand and told me if I really loved the brand I should trade it in and buy another! Guess he was right. (I kept that '85 for 15 years and it has been replaced by used Saabs ever since.)

The thing is though I regard being in debt as a very bad thing, especially for something that depreciates quickly like a car. I bought that new Saab mainly because at the time I worked for a company that gave me an allowance for a car and that paid for most of it. I really have not applied for any credit of any kind since the mid-1980s and have no debts of any kind. I suppose if everyone lived that way the country would be in a permanent depression, but it's my preference.

Moving forward it's possible parts may become a problem. We won't know for a while if there are going to be any real show-stoppers. I expect the worst outlook will be Saab-specific parts for the NG9-5 and of course the 9-4 since there aren't enough of those cars to interest the aftermarket and used parts will be scarce.
