Well, you can't easily buy an opel in North America, and to be fair, the og9-3, og9-5, ng9-3 etc were all very different than opel cars on the same platforms. Eg on the ng9-3, SAAB engineering went kind of bonkers doing things like fibre entertainment system and custom nav etc... much of those cars was totally different than GM equivalents and that was one of the things that pissed GM off. It also in many respects made them much better cars, even if they share many items from the GM parts bin.
It's very hard to say what a "pure" saab is anyway, as I don't have to add oil to my 1989 c900 nor can I pull a chain to allow more or less air to cool the rad... etc etc...
That said, to me what is SAAB is the engineering philosophy, and things that get passed down generationally through the engineering staff over the years. To me, things started to unravel in the GM years around the time of the ng 9-3, and this worsened over the course of the 2000 decade to the point that when people left with the bankruptcy, most of any SAAB left went out the door with them.
So it is probably good that SAAB aerospace wants nothing to do with what is left. Brand identity is important and having it tarnished over and over again is not good! I'm pretty sure if someone took the remains and developed something really cool (think Mr. Koenigsegg) with a real business plan with real market interest, they could be persuaded to license the name again (particularly if such licensing was profitable!).
