I'm really crushed by this news. By FAR my favorite magazine and I had assumed it was doing well. They say specialty mags are the only growth sector and I had assumed this was one of those.
One site I've been very impressed with, both content and commercialization wise is Bring a Trailer. It started as a fairly low-key site listing interesting car ads with a bit of editorializing and just a few ads, but now also hosts a pretty large number of interesting car auctions. I never would have thought of that, but they seems successful and they're integrated non-intrusively and actually add to the content of the site. The best part is readers do most of the submissions these days - they're doing the work for you! I have no idea of their finances of course, but it struck me as very clever and well executed monetization of what seemed like someones for-fun website.
