You're right, we looked at that about 3 years back. But the home value for the dollar compared to here in NH wasn't there for us--less house for the same money, more taxes, etc.
So we decided not to do that. Then a couple years ago we found a house in Nova Scotia that needed some love. It's is on the water, with a place to put a boat right in front. It made a lot of sense, so we pulled the trigger. We go up 3-4 x a year, including all of August (glad I can work from home!). We're whittling away on the work it needs (good thing we're both handy), and it'll be worth it when we go to sell. Has a million dollar view.
We could still wind up out west, but that's after we sell both NS and NH. And, when we find out where our elder kid is likely to wind up after grad school. The younger one will be in New Zealand, so if we landed out west it'd be a bit easier (and cheaper) than flying from the east coast.
Time will tell!
