Most people move someplace for work. To just throw a dart at a board is problematic because you can never really know what a town is like until you actually live there. It takes a good year or so to really get a sense of it. While it might look good "on paper" the fact is it still might not suit YOU. I've lived in a number of seemingly wonderful places that I didn't care for so much. There were a number of things I didn't particularly like about Aspen, as an example. I liked the Boulder area much better and I much prefer where I live now to Colorado. We spent a good bit of time at our boss's vineyard in Napa and didn't find it that appealing (Sonoma either). We found Yountville and Saint Helena to be more our style. I guess my point is that you'd be well served to rent before you buy someplace--at the very least spent some time there before you make a commitment.
