Can you be more specific? What year or years was this supposedly happening? Mercedes-Benzes these days can run less than some Malibus, Ford Fusions, Toyota Camrys, etc. but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Mercedes ability or inability to market their cars.
Increased competition starting in the 1980s/90s with new brands like Acura, Infiniti and Lexus really shook things for all of the premium/luxury brands. Pretty much everyone in that space was forced into price cuts, discounting, etc. during these times. But as I wrote, notable discounts on Saabs were common even before GM first acquired part of the company in 1990. Saab likely would not have survived the 1990s (at least in the U.S.) without GM.
I do, however, think that GM's plan or desire to make Saab more mainstream and competitive with brands like BMW and Mercedes was too optimistic. Saab seemingly was always destined to be a small, niche player which at its pricing level made profitability difficult.
